Slewfoot: A Tale of Bewitchery by Brom

4.0

I love how this story takes witch stereotypes for lack of a better word. Samson tells Abitha to take her broom and fly through the sky, because she always had a dream to fly with the birds.

It also takes Christian imagery and gives it a completely different perspective. The forbidden tree of knowledge is the crimson leafed fruit bearing tree that is the physical manifestation of mother nature’s magic any who eat the fruit gain its power. The serpent that tricks Eve is the embodiment of Mother Nature. The devil is a protector of the living, dead, and the tree.

I understand that the violence in this book happened to real people of this time, but it was too much for me. I’m personally very sensitive to reading about torture.
