The Saints of Swallow Hill by Donna Everhart

Swallow Hill, NC is a turpentine camp where folks down on their luck head to try and make a living tapping trees to make turpentine. Who knew? Everhart tells the story of Del Reese, a young man searching for himself and moving from job to job while entertaining multiple women and Rae Lynn, a young widow who disguises herself as a man to get out of town and go work in the camp. Del, 'Ray' and their friend Cornelia, are the 'saints' of Swallow Hill as they confront, and escape, the evil and complacency of the men who run the camp.
