This series keeps getting better and better. I was floored by the one.
This one is said to be the darkest of the series and oooh I was in my feelings. This one dealt with family trauma, child abuse, suicidal ideation and much more. This one spent more time with just Hansel and Gerhardt to establish their relationship (!!) before getting to the candy house. That set piece was so well done.
Not really true enemies to lovers. Just two scared boys enduring under fraught circumstances and misunderstanding.
We got the reveal of Herr Candy and it was amazing. I should’ve clocked it, but I didn’t and I quite enjoyed myself.
I loved the Easter eggs dropped in this - there was talking hare knows about Red and the wolf. Note: there is a short story of a ONE NIGHT ONLY between Red/Wim and Hansel/Gerhardt that’s supposed to be 🌶️🌶️🌶️.
Note: I’m enjoying that the sex scenes (obvs) between each couple correspond well with their fairytale. Like these guys love playing with their food (WINK WINK).
Go in to with no preconceived notions and get your heart broke, put back together and get flabbergasted by the epilogue. I’m reading for the next book.
‘Digging, scraping away, pouring all of what was left of his humanity into that ground, which waited daily to swallow him up as it had done Gerhardt’s own mother.’
“What I wouldn’t give to be dead in ground with the rest of them. You mark my words, it’s the only way either of us will ever get out of this place.”
‘How cruel for Hansel to be left alone out there in the Dark Forest. Gerhardt would just have to not die, unpleasant as the thought was.’
‘But he couldn’t tell him. He couldn’t, because very suddenly, Gerhardt became aware that that we handed to say wasn’t the words of a brother.’
“Don’t wake me. Don’t you dare wake me.”
“I’ve been so hungry. Please. Feed it to me, Hansel.”
“I told you, I won’t leave you for anything. It’s you who has the choice.”
Received as an advanced reader copy.
