Again I find myself unsure how to rate a book that I didn't particularly enjoy but probably should have. This is kind of another case of my library hold coming in while I wasn't quite in the mood for this book.

Despite that, I really enjoyed the first part of the story where we follow Atreyu's adventures and the side story that happens in the "real world" at the same time. What an interesting and innovative book for it's time. I can see why this was a classic and so influential. Even though the tone, style, and possibly many of the themes are very reminiscent of Narnia, this book still has some much unique world-building and structure to offer on its own.

The second half of the book I didn't enjoy as much. Ironically, I might have liked it more if this book a had been divided into a duology or maybe a trilogy. It makes sense that they kept it as one endlessly long book though, it is afterall, "The *NEVER ENDING* story". And it really started to feel like that to me at the 60% mark. I was tired that more things kept happening and the plot kept going on and on when I wanted a resolution already.

Regardless, there's plenty about the book that I can respect and admire, particularly the felt that it felt so original despite being close to 50 years old.

I recommend this for anyone who loves classic fantasy and especially those who want it to be a good long one.
