This was a fun middle grade, science-fiction book about an “eccentric” group of friends who go on adventures and solve mysteries while also navigating your everyday middle school problems - gender identity, family issues, etc. Is it perfect? No - there isn’t as much depth as the author’s other middle grade book (Vanished), the story has some holes in it, the overall tone is a bit choppy and there’s a lot of, “wait, that’s it? Scene is over?”

However, I really loved the characters and to be honest, I think this book is just setting the reader up for the real adventure in book #2. Also representation matters and it’s really awesome seeing an Indian kid take the lead and be the brave hero! We are never given those opportunities and I always appreciate it when authors take that chance in a mainstream way.

I will keep this series in mind when my kids are ready to read at this level because they’ll be delighted to see themselves in the protagonists.
