Milk Fed by Melissa Broder
2.0

I think this book will teach me to look into it a bit more before adding just any book to my TBR. Milk Fed is 288 pages long and I’d say a solid 200 of them were pure smut, lol. I’m not complaining at the smut, as such, although at times I did feel like I was intruding on something; I’m thankful this wasn’t one I read in public. It follows the life of Rachel, a 24 year old woman with severe mummy issues. Since childhood, she’s not felt like she belongs within her family, religion or her sexuality, and she tries to maintain a grip on that by painstakingly restricting her food consumption. (Obvious trigger warning there). The story takes a turn when she meets, and falls for, Miriam and Milk Fed follows the way Rachel’s life takes a turn when she tries to allow herself parts of life she’d never explored before. It wasn’t a bad story, but not much truly happened. I wish we’d delved more into her relationship with her mum, it was obvious to us how it had effected her self-worth and her decision making, but her mum was more of an idea rather than anything solid. At it’s base, it’s a heartbreaking tale of self discovery, the sadness and feelings of being alone that come with that. I do feel, however, that was just completely overshadowed by the graphic sex scenes (some of them incredibly weird, not the good kind of weird, might I add). Can’t give this one any more than 2.5 stars ⭐️⭐️.5 (rounded down)
