Nearly Dead: Am Ende stirbst du by Elle Cosimano

3.0

2.5 stars. All the elements of a great story were there but it just never quite made it. I rounded up to 3 stars because the mystery was clever and I was surprised by who the culprit was. I must say I never once suspected them. However I was constantly frustrated by the stupid decisions Nearly made and her lack of respect for pretty much everyone in her life except the ex-con who admitted to dealing drugs and being responsible for someone's death and who was spending time with her because the police wanted him to watch her and report on her as part of his parole (and she KNEW this). Given that Nearly is aware that Reece is watching her for the police because she is a suspect she is way too open and trusting with him especially given her lack of trust in pretty much everyone else. Also Jeremy is supposedly her bestest friend in all the world, the one person who is always there for her yet she tells him nothing about what is going on and blows him off for the good-looking douche ex-con without explanation. I don't fault her for not wanting a relationship with Jeremy- you can't force love. I do fault the way she cuts him out of her life. And I hated the disrespect she had for her mother. Mona did the best she good to give Nearly a better chance in life. Yet she reserves all her positive feelings for her deadbeat dad who abandoned them without a word leaving debts that poor Mona had to pay. I will read the next one because as I said the mystery was well plotted and surprising yet I would hope for some character development on Nearly's part and that she actually applies her supposedly high intelligence to her decisions.
