Lost Connections: Uncovering the Real Causes of Depression – and the Unexpected Solutions by Johann Hari

3.0

I'd give it 3.5 stars. I liked the book. I liked the layout and the format. Stating the problems that lead to depression and the laying out the solutions (that are not always medication) to fix depression. Basically, the solution is connection. Connection to people, community and nature/the environment, something bigger than ourselves. I agree to a point. As someone who has struggled with depression and anxiety my whole life, I know that there are ways to manage my issues--exercise, friends, self-care. But there is only so much that helps and then medication steps in and does the rest. So that's the flaw in the argument. I agree that modern medicine is flawed and is too quick to just give meds, but I don't think never giving meds is the option either.
