What Hunts Inside the Shadows
by Harper L. Woods
In some ways I really enjoyed this sequel more than its predecessor--in some, I miss the first book and its simplicity of Estrella and Caelum finding love.
This book picks right up where What Lies Behind the Veil left off. Estrella just found out that Caelum is actually Caldris--God of the Dead. And she feels completely betrayed by his lie-by-omission.
It takes quite a bit for Caldris and Estrella's relationship to reach the point of trust and openness that one would hope they could achieve. But they do.
And then their problems lie with Queen Mab and the fact that Estrella could very well be her daughter.
What I loved about this book was that we're introduced to a new character--Fallon. And she and Estrella have a connection. A deep friendship that goes back to their previous lives. I can't wait to see their relationship fleshed out more. One of my favorite things to read are strong female relationships. And even though Caldris is Estrella's whole world--it's nice to see her care about someone else too.
This book does end on a cliffhanger. I'm pretty sure ALL the books will end like that until the very end. And while, normally, this would kill me--I do appreciate that the author doesn't make us wait TOO long for each book.
All-in-all, What Hunts Inside the Shadows was a great follow-up to a wonderful start. I'm just needing more Caldris and Estrella--and with that ending (hello, Queen Mab), I'm also terrified of what What Lurks Between the Fates has in store.
