Maybe We’ll Prescribe You a Cat spoiled me a bit, because I struggled to connect with this book like I did with WPYAC. The premise of Blanket Cats was interesting. Customers are able to rent a cat for 3 days at a time, and each short story follows a different person that rents a cat. But other than that, I feel like the cover of this book is pretty misleading. I found some chapters better than others, but overall I struggled, especially with the, well, awful people. I didn’t know that I actually signed up to read about some fairly terrible people rather than cute cats with blankets. We have criminals and bullies and a touch of animal abuse in there. What? It was hard to enjoy at times.
Granted, not everyone was awful. There were some charming stories in the mix. But overall I felt like this collection just didn’t nail it for me and left me feeling more hollow than satisfied, particuarly with the often very open endings. Plus a lot of the time, the cats are mostly very minor parts of the stories. I’d recommend We’ll Prescribe You a Cat instead.
