My Heart Is a Chainsaw by Stephen Graham Jones

5.0

I loved this book! So glad I didn’t listen to the naysayers that complained this book was too slow and boring, not scary enough, not enough gore, etc… For me, nothing makes me lose interest faster, than if a horror novel is just wall to wall gore with a chorus line of one dimensional characters all lining up for a slaughter. If the first 2/3 of this novel wasn’t as character driven, and chill, allowing you to really get to know Jade Daniels, to get into her head, and feel all her pain and motivations, then the denouement of this story wouldn’t be as effective or hit as hard as it does. I couldn’t put this down. I loved Jade, her supporting cast, the setting, the Slasher Films 101 chapter breaks, and all the great social commentary scattered throughout the story. And holy shit! Does the ending deliver ! A fantastic beginning to The Indian Lake Trilogy, and this book has helped me come to my senses and embrace how wonderful an author Stephen Graham Jones is. Now, onto the next chapter!
