Vinland Saga 1
by Makoto Yukimura
I'm a sucker for an action story, but this one was done very well - full of physical prowess, honor, and the moral struggle between protecting people and ending precious life. Although there are some classical themes here that are easy to predict (so far) having them in the Viking context added a splash of originality.
Also I was surprised how much I enjoyed seeing the historical details of common life in Iceland. Sometimes exploring the backstory is an annoying interruption to the plot, but this time I think it really deepened the context of the world and the characters in a way that was valuable and enjoyable.
I'm looking forward to reading more!
