Where the Truth Lies
by Karina Kilmore
There aren't enough good contemporary Aussie crime reads so kudos to Karina for giving us something new to read!
Although I think we are supposed to be up close with the messed up protagonist and her coping mechanisms, I always felt a distance from Chrissie - was it that her flaws started to annoy me or the lack of personal journey? Her connection with the victims, even Mas, were just not enough to believe Chrissie was driven to investigate their deaths gave me the feeling that the author has a personal story to tell and has done a good deal of background research.
Chrissie's backstory also felt a little too obvious. I understand where she's at with a DD accident, but wanted some greater insight into it, not just a block out with drugs and alcohol.
I also have to say the ending was clear to me very early not that I would stop a book for that reason but it was just bit too obvious. A few more red herrings in that area would have helped.
The last chapters on the wedding were very detailed and for me unnecessary other than finding out **** is the scumbag. Found myself skimming the descriptions and thinking this author loves weddings doesn't she. She's on solid ground writing about this. (Whereas I'd be on quicksand :-)
I hope to read the next book and see the same honest subject matter and some better character and plot movement.
