This is really a classic by Munshi Premchand. I am astonished yet not by the dialogues and situations completely mirroring what even I got to see. This story might be based on 20th century Indian society but so much of it is true up until now. This is not a book for story but a close look to the shown society. If you can relate to that you will enjoy it. But it's a tragic tale and it's like a real type of fiction, so although it is full of plots but nothing out of the world.
Every line was so easy to visualise, that's why I remember most of the events, which is kind of not always the case.
It hasn't lost its relavancy yet it provides such a close look to exact how some people were living their lives.
I wouldn't say that you should read it just for the story, it's more to realise the bad practices but more precisely bad ingrained values of society where the characters themselves are not that cruel because what they seem to do what was just happening. I felt characters were very humane but tightly strangled by society.
First the character Nirmala was the victim of child marriage but married to a way rich older man with three sons, one older than her. Her husband cared for her a lot, and wanted to show his love but she can't help but hesitate because that is the kind of love she got from her father. All the family members did care for each other but because of misunderstandings, their family completely fell apart. All character of the entire story struggle their entire life.
But for me instead of going after the story, it was really a chance to get a close look to the tragic life of not just the main character but different members of society, and helped me reflect a lot of things I can learn from each wrong of all characters and also the value of communication.
It was a short book but so rich in plots.
