A Boy Called Christmas by Matt Haig

5.0

This was a wonderful and moving Christmas story! The story of Father Christmas! A tale of adventure, magic and impossible things!

Eleven year old Nicolas knows already knows how hard life can be, losing his mother as a young boy now him and his father, a woodcutter, live in a one room shack without much of anything but they have each other and that is enough for Nicolas anyway. But an opportunity for a big payday sways his father to leave Nicolas with his horrible aunt. After months pass and much misery, Nicholas goes in search of his father and had an epic adventure!

I read this aloud to my 8 year old and we both really enjoyed it! It hits on all the Santa mythology and has the big themes surrounding Christmas time of course like hope, giving and family but I really liked how it showed that happiness can be so simple yet complicated. It was funny too with hints of sarcasm. This was my first book by Haig and he is a great storyteller! Even In this magic filled adventure geared for middle grade readers, he doesn't shy away from showing human loss and pain. My son wanted to stop reading at one point because Nicolas suffers a great loss but Haig used this opportunity to show the good in people even if they have done wrong in their lives, showing how important it is to believe in the people we love, and it was very resonating even though it came at a great cost to the main character. We kept reading and my son ended up loving it by the end. Highly reccomend! This is a series and I'm looking forward to continuing it next year! It's also a movie on Netflix.

I'm definitely going to read more of Haig's books!
