Swole: The Making of Men and the Meaning of Muscle by Michael Andor Brodeur
Did not finish book. Stopped at 13%.
I was actually really looking forward to this, as I spent a lot of time in gyms and fitness spaces starting at a really young age. The book's structure, and some of the author's narrative choices, just didn't work for me. This is more a memoir than it is a critical look at masculinities, and the pop culture references are all extremely dated. I didn't recognize a single one other than a passing mention of My Little Pony. 15% in, I didnt feel like I'd gained any new insight or info. So while there was nothing egregiously bad about this, there are just too many good books out there to spend my limited time on something I'm not enjoying or learning much from.
I'd consider revisiting this in the future (maybe as a casual audio listen when it shows up in my library's catalogue) because I liked the author's tone and style.
