mermelephant 's review for:
Beartown
by Fredrik Backman
The character development in the first 150 pages had me pulled in completely. Then the plot unfolded and I had no idea that was what this book was about. I had just read "What We Saw" which is essentially the same plot. But I thought that book to be dull and shallow and cheesy, while Beartown leaped to the top of my favorite books. Would read again.
Update: 2.5 years later, this books esdential theme has been written about a billion times and I've read about it maybe a million. And still all this time later, Beartown remains the best book for this theme. How it pulls you into a whole town. How it builds. How it realistically plays out without a bow and a ribbon for everything. This is the book I recommend above any other in the "hs student raped by most popular jock and how it's handled (or not)" theme. Amazing book.
