Twisted Loyalties by Cora Reilly

3.0

Fabiano has been my favorite Scuderi for a while. The youngest brother was overlooked a lot in the shadows of his sisters, he was always the one left out, blaming himself for not being able to save his loved ones from their fate. Mostly, I was concerned about him having to deal with his father alone. The previous series allowed us to see Fabiano's entire childhood so it felt like I knew him so well, a lot was expected from this book in that regard. I wasn't sure it'd be possible to see him in new light or even worse, a complete different person I wouldn't be able to understand.

I'm so glad no such thing happened, expectations have been well met. Fabiano in this book was different than I was used to but he was still that caring little soul deep within, he turned out the way he did because of his trashy father which I still think is far better than being under his rule. He built himself from scratch since the day he was left on the streets to die. He earned his place among the enemies, they made him their enforcer, his name made the same streets shudder. He took it as an oath to kill his father and make the Chicago Outfit bleed—the place he once called home. He resented the Vitiellos and his sisters for leaving him when he needed them the most, his hatred burned brighter than his traitorous compassion for them. I wouldn't hold him accountable for any of that, he was just a kid when his father started torturing him for the things his sisters did, he sought Aria's protection but she got caught before she could reach him and was sent back to her husband.

As the daughter of an addict and a whore, Leona Halls never had anyone to protect her, she knew the harsh reality of the world. She grew up watching her parents fight till eventually her father walked out of their lives. She fended for herself ever since, watching her mother sell every piece of her for drug money. She did all that she could to never be called out for her parents doings but that didn't save her from society's judgments. When her mother got her last chance at rehab, she was hoping for things to finally get better as she moved to live with her father in Las Vegas, he told her he's over his addiction and has a steady job. She appeared at the old, broken-down apartment in the darkest corner of the city and knew he was anything but happy to have her. All these years apart hadn't changed him a bit, she knew she had to find work in that unknown city to support her stay. A city under the rule of Camorra might not be the best place for someone like her, not when she caught the eye of one of their own.

Fabiano and Leona were so perfect together. With him, she felt a sense of belonging; to be protected and cared for, she smoothed out his hard edges and made him see the person he once was. Leona made him lose all his resolve, made him want to be better for her. He had been broken for so long that he forgot what being whole felt like until she showed him just that.
