Alice Oseman is a numen.

This was my favorite volume in the Heartstopper series so far. Basically the last 2/3 of the book I had tears rolling down my face. This is moving. Humanizing. It handles mental illness and eating disorders with the human-centered respect that they’re due. No stigma. Just love.

My favorite bits were…
1) When Nick opens up to his Mom about Charlie’s eating disorder. His Mom is such a wonderful human being. Her guidance about how to love and show up for someone struggling with their mental health is so spot on and honest. Sometimes I need a reminder that we can’t fix things for our loved ones. I will keep this volume filed away for when I need to give my inner child this exact pep talk about how I am loving and showing up for the folx in my own life. Nick’s Mom is the Mom I wish I had.

2) The very authentic feeling journal entries from both Nick and Charlie. Such a fun, unique way to tell the story. Mental health is a challenging thing to navigate. Whether you’re struggling or loving someone who is struggling - and sometimes BOTH simultaneously. I was so moved at how these characters developed in learning to show up for each other and accept the limits of what they can do/and/fix. I just. I just love it.

3) When Nick stands up to his Dad about not being there.

4) When Tori, Charlie’s sister, kicks the phone from Nick’s brother’s hands and tells him to grow up.

5) The teachers in the back! 😍

All in all, this is a lovely piece of work. Humans and connections are messy AND beautiful. Alice really captures all of that here. Tissues! ❤️💣🔥☄️🤯🌋
