The Burning Chambers
by Kate Mosse
There were too many mysteries, unknowns and story threads for much of the first third. I have no knowledge of, or interest in, the religious wars in early Europe. The chapters hopped all over France and between characters. Just as I was interested it jumped to someone (or somewhere) else. I found it a frustrating book. And yet something kept me reading. Suddenly I’m 400 pages down and it’s 3am (I’d only meant to read a couple of chapters). The final third is where the threads finally come together and questions are answered, and I found myself speeding through the final chapters.
Did I enjoy it? I’m not sure. Would I recommend it? I have absolutely no idea. Will I read the next book? You know, I just might.
