kiwikathleen 's review for:
Devil Bones
by Kathy Reichs
It's true - one bad apple can spoil the whole tray. Speaking metaphorically, of course, because there's no mention anywhere in this book of apples. But 4 1/2 years ago I wrote that it was some years since I'd read a book by Kathy Reichs because I'd disliked the previous one and I'd been anxious about continuing in case of further disappointment. And that hesitancy still remained.
Horror of horrors, I think I've been like the 'one strike' proponents. This will not do! No more holding on to the memory of the bad apple that has long ago been cast away!
This book is classic Reichs. A convoluted plot, plenty of gory detail (but not in a sensational way), a good dollop of factual forensic information (for those interested in the science, but not so much that this reader's eyes gloss over), some nice touches of humanity (making even the nasty into genuine people, and creating characters we can relate to), and the ongoing family issues and love-life of Temperance Brennan. All this within a story that encompasses alternative religions, and promotes tolerance for them while having rabble-rousing intolerance as a key feature. A great read.
