Fighting to Forget by J.B. Salsbury
5.0

J.B. Salsbury has created this whole world of MMA fighters in Vegas that I just can’t get enough of. Her first two books, with Jonah and Blake have the usual alpha males, but she balances those with women who may be broken, but are very strong in their own right. You never feel like they’re helpless and just waiting for a big strong man to come save them.
She’s turned it around a little bit in her third book by switching up the roles. You still have the alpha male, you still have the strong female, but there is no doubt in anyone’s mind that both of these people are very much broken. But, neither one is stronger than the other. Rex is all man, but he’s got some serious trauma that is affecting him current day, and Gia may not have the same daily problems that Rex deals with, but her life has not been all rainbows either and she had dedicated her life to atoning for something no 8 year old should be held responsible for. I also really liked that they didn’t just stoically handle their problems by ignoring them. Rex spends years seeing a therapist… and still does to deal with how he handles what’s done to him. I liked that it wasn’t just implied that he could come to some understanding of how he was treated on his own, and it wasn’t played off that he was reluctant or resistant to finding that help that he knew he needed.
Even one of my hard limits for books, infidelity among the characters, was handled well and you understand why and how it happened. But, saying that Rex’s relationship with Emma bothered me.
This book could really be read on it’s own, but you’ll enjoy it more if you read the whole series.
