Yellow Wife by Sadeqa Johnson
3.0

This book was extremely heavy, almost to the point of being difficult to get through. I'm glad I did end up finishing it, though -- I was really surprised to see this is entirely based off a true story of Mary Lumpkin. I think Sadeqa Johnson did a wonderful job of giving a voice and a story to those who were victims to a horrific period of history. That being said -- the prose in this book was a bit clunky and felt somewhat distant. Time flew by strangely fast and seemingly randomly with little transition, and some of the wording of scenes/sentences was awkward and stilted. I also didn't love the ending, it felt like a strangely unsatisfying end for the characters and seemed like it was tacked on as an afterthought. I think the story itself held promise and was interesting, but the writing itself could have used a bit more improving. Overall, I think it was an important book and really liked Johnson's adaptation of a real historical figure.
