This is a hard hitting ride that is as emotionally dubious as it is compelling. Shunned from the pack that raised her, for reasons not her own, Mera is just bidding her time till she can escape the terror of her daily life... until the unthinkable happens.
The punches start hitting the reader in the first few pages, but really ramp up by the time the Winter Solstice comes around, leaving us bleeding and soul torn, just like Mera. It's horrific - and so dang good I almost cried. I LOVE Mera! She is young yet mature in the harsher truths of life, and somehow determined to carve her own path with what little time she believes she is allotted.
Her journey is fraught with subtle angst, though at no point do you get the impression that she is a whiney child rebelling against her station. No, she snarks back and far too often lands herself in more trouble because her mouth lacks the wisdom her heart has gained.... but it suits her, and it suits the narrative incredibly well.
By the time that cliffhanger dangled me off the edge (honestly though, yes, there is a cliff, but it is NOT as bad as some reviewers have implied) I found myself thoroughly and intensely invested in this story. I need to know what happens with Mera, WHO is she really? HOW is she? Torin can go pound sand, but Jaxson intrigues me somewhat. And Shadow? Oh goodness.... HE IS EVERYTHING!

This novel weaves and entices just as much as it bludgeons the reader with emotion - a slow seduction with a slap in the face, and I am so here for it. Delightful, painful and a true 'must read' aura
