The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo
4.0

Xiomara is born to older parents. Parents from the Dominican Republic. Parents who had given up on having any children, and then Xiomara and her twin brother are born. Xiomara's mother is very religious and very strict. Xiomara is struggling with her Catholic church confirmation classes and a world where a body like hers is a reason for her mother to pray that she won't attract the wrong kind of looks or any guys at all. There will be no dating, there will be no phone calls, no hanging out after school. Then Xiomara notices a boy in one of her classes. He's not like the others. He asks to hear her recite her poetry. He shares his favorite music with her. He makes her want to skip her confirmation classes.

This is a lovely book that adds a diverse voice and a story told in free voice poetry that is as big and bold as its main character. Prepare to be captivated!
