The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis

5.0

The Breadwinner was an excellent yet quick read. Ellis encapsulated the desolate realities many families have faced since the Taliban has taken over.

Given that this is a YA novel, Ellis eloquently discusses the horrors the young people of Afghanistan have been facing. She illustrates the Taliban’s iron fist and the rules and restrictions placed on women and children in order to control them.

While her pages are riddled with fear of what comes next, she splatters an ample amount of hope in between each blow. Through strength and persistence, her protagonist pushes through.

The Breadwinner is a wonderful way to learn more about the atrocities occurring in the Middle East. It allows its reader to find empathy and understanding for the families struggling to survive.

Lastly, Ellis pushes her readers to begin conversations about what comes next.
