The List by Yomi Adegoke

3.0

In her audiobook interview, Adegoke stated, "…The List is a book about the internet…" This statement struck a chord with me, as the narrative is deeply intertwined with the internet and its profound, yet distressing, influence on the protagonists.

While some reviews label the book as apologist and criticize the main characters, Adegoke clarifies in her interview that she intentionally crafted the characters to be flawed and authentic mirroring the complexities of real life. I highly recommend listening to the interview for a deeper understanding of Adegoke’s perspective on her work. I was initially dismissive of the book. However, as I continued reading, I discovered that it provides a subtle commentary on a range of themes. While not necessarily groundbreaking, these topics certainly stimulate meaningful discussions and reflections.

The List is a book for our time. It’s nuanced, polarizing, and compelling. I look forward to exploring Adegoke’s future works and delving into similar genres.
