Pan: A Novel
by Michael Clune
I was worried I would be in the minority here, but after I finished, I noticed quite a few reviews feeling similar to me. I really wish I liked this more. The cover is SO cool and the story started out really intriguing. Nick is a high school student starting to experience panic attacks. The descriptions of the panic attacks are spot on - I'm not sure how Michael Clune got into my brain, but he did. Nick ends up thinking the Greek God Pan is trapped inside his body.
The book is a unique coming of age story, but the second half really lost me. It was sort of fever dream-y and psychedelic which isn't always my comfort spot anyways - so it wasn't an easy read. Not in the sense of content but actually reading the words. It was a chore sometimes to pick up.
I think this is the right story for people who enjoy wacky, bizarre, stream of conciousness type books!
Final verdict: first half, enjoyed a lot. second half, not so much.
