Area X sucks. Let's always remember that. Despite all the horror, chaos and corruption that is/was Area X, it was real nice to be back. While not my favorite of the series, it was definitely good enough and pretty much proves that the source material is ripe for expansion. Old Jim and Fake Cass were the standouts for me. Thankfully that section was less madness and more character development stuff. Heartbreaking and terrifying all at once. He does step on the gas pedal kind of unexpectedly and it was a lot to take in.

I did not necessarily enjoy Lowry's perspective as the narrator in the final third. Wasn't really hoping to be an observer inside an addict's mind while the world literally changed and dissolved in front of him. While I've loved reading about the Southern Reach and Area X, it's in no way fun to actually be thrust into that chaotic existence as if I was there and suffering with the rest of those doomed folks. Became a bit of a chore to finish, though I do think he ultimately stuck the landing. Area X sucks in case I forgot to mention it.
