The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly
3.0
A quick, highly allusive read with an engaging narrative. 3.5 stars because I found the ending predictable and I am just not sure it was all that important to provide the historical backdrop at the beginning, before David slips through the garden. I wonder if there’s an allegorical meaning with the war parallels (are the wolves Nazis and is Leroi Hitler?) or if the time and place are simply a) fodder for the Crooked Man’s big speech toward the end or b) a reflection of the author’s experience. In any case, while the falling of the bomb is a reasonable inciting incident, it’s less clear to me why we need to know things like the fact that David’s father is a code-breaker.
