Daring and the Duke
by Sarah MacLean
I have been looking forward to this book for a year, and I am devastated by it. I love this author, I’ve loved most of her past books, but this one was an utter train wreck for me. Really, the entire series was a train wreck for me, in the end. It’s like the book couldn’t decide what it wanted to be, so it just threw everything in. UFC fighting? Check. Missing person come back to life? Check. Childhood love? Check. Rags to riches? Check. Stalking and pining? Check. One night stand, supposedly? Check.
Now, keep in mind this is a historical romance, because every person in this story has modern ideals and actions. I know that reading historical romance requires a fair amount of suspended belief, there’s nothing realistic about it. However, this book was over the top. Pants wearing woman owning a women’s only {dare I just call it a sex club??? I think the book calls it a “pleasure club”} club, with an all female security team, who UFC fights, has a modern philosophy on sex, gets around London only on rooftops, and I could go on. I just couldn’t anymore, the book was so ridiculous. I gave up at 64% and I won’t regret it for a minute.
