RECAP: The Barclays seem like the perfect family, but behind their gated D.C. mansion lies a chilling mystery. After their nanny’s suspicious death, nine-year-old Rose stops speaking, and attorney Stella Hudson—despite her own troubled past—is brought in to protect her. As Stella digs deeper, uncovering dark secrets & deception at every turn, she must determine who’s a victim, who’s a killer, and whether the child she’s meant to protect might be the one she should fear.
REVIEW: The premise was intriguing, and I enjoyed the slow build, eerie setting & suspenseful mystery. Stella was a strong character, but the story lost momentum with unnecessary subplots & some unrealistic twists. I wish it had focused more on the core mystery & on Rose (I wanted more of this creepy, "wise-beyond-her-years" girl). Overall, it had promise but didn’t fully deliver. This novel is perfect for readers who enjoy psychological thrillers with family secrets, moral gray areas & the lingering effects of past trauma.
