My second try with cozy sci fi proved more successful than the first. It might not have been as gritty as more traditional sci fi, but Becky Chambers managed to play up the kumbaya, found-family warmth and fuzziness while maintaining real stakes, intrigue, and tension in the story. The best this story has going for it is the world building. I loved the Star Trek style coexistence of many alien peoples and the resulting dynamics when cultural or physical differences inevitably clash.
