The Eye of Darkness by George Mann

adventurous emotional hopeful inspiring mysterious sad tense medium-paced

4.5

Set one year after the fateful events of the end of Phase I of The High Republic, The Eye of Darkness explores a galaxy quickly running out of hope. With Marchion Ro and his Nihil controlling a large portion of Republic space, the Jedi and civilians alike are left wondering if they will ever find a light in the darkness again.

George Mann had the difficult task of not only setting a foundation for the final phase of The High Republic series, but having to include aspects of Phase II in a way that feels natural and not confusing to those who maybe have't read that phase yet. In my opinion, he succeeded. There are characters from Phase I and Phase II that I grew to truly understand through this book. There are small details from Phase II that reminded me of just how important that prequel phase is to the inner workings of this era. In short, The Eye of Darkness felt like a 'welcome home' for Phase I and a 'we'll never forget you' for Phase II all at once.

Though this is a relatively quiet book, with less action than I had initially expected, it's full to the brim with the promise of more to come. And not just more pain or fighting. Mann weaves an important message into all of the interconnected stories in this book, and it's the one that Star Wars always does best: light will prevail, and hope is never truly gone.

I'm excited for the rest of this series and can't wait to see what the other authors have in store for us!
