The Writing Retreat by Julia Bartz

3.0

This was a wild and I mean WILD ride but I can’t in good conscious give it any more than 3 stars due to the “excerpts” from the “book” the main character was writing being so laughably bad. I’m sorry, I can’t take it seriously with all the characters talking about this masterpiece of a novel the MC is writing and then the excerpts are…that. Please. It gave me secondhand embarrassment.

There were also some strange date issues. Unless I misunderstood something, the book seems to be saying the 30 year old main character’s mom was 2 years old during WW2. This book was set in present day so she’d have given birth to the MC around the age of 50 (??) and is now the remarried 80 year old step mother of teenagers (?). Feels like there was some poorly done last minute editing there.
