This was basically my favourite book (series) when I was younger so I can't possibly rate it now with that bias.
I am quite a bit more skeptical now, though, of a 13-year-old's knowledge of niche mechanical topics. Also, I can't believe how short this book is (I mean, I can, I read The River during a class trip to the library in grade 6, but still). I think I must be remembering things that happen in the other books in the series.

Moderate: Animal death, Blood, Car accident, Confinement, Death, and Vomit
Minor: Infidelity, Suicidal thoughts, and Suicide attempt
No car accidents... just a plane accident
