The Frolic of the Beasts
by Yukio Mishima
“…three fish caught in a net of sin.”
well, that pretty much sums up this book -and my review, in a nut (or net) shell !
The Frolic Of The Beasts is all about an intense, dysfunctional -almost carnal, love triangle(?) that, like any classic affair, doesn’t exactly have the most hopeful of happiest of endings (I don’t think that’s a spoiler…)
This is my second (yup, I’m all about those second chances) Mishima, and though I still found his language (or perhaps the translation) rather challenging to read at times, I seem to have come out the other side unscathed (which is more than can be said for some of the characters…).
I think slowly beginning to understand -and perhaps even appreciate, Mishima visually poetic writing style. Where plot, in a way, comes mostly secondary to the characters; their emotions and environments.
A beautifully written book, about some not so beautiful people.
