In short, this book was not good.
As a general rule, I don’t give 1⭐️ reviews. I find it to be disrespectful to authors and just all around cruel. But this one was necessary. I will be respectful as I can be, while maintaining honesty.
First of all, the timelines jumped around entirely too much. It was far too difficult to follow. Several characters were added for no good reason, and only made the plot far more complicated than necessary.
Second of all, everything relating to the actual crime in the center of the story was too complicated. The “A” girls, the survivor, all the suspects, the random podcast, it was all way too much, especially IN ADDITION to Alex’s struggles in the current day timeline.
And we were pushed so hard to believe, as readers, through the ENTIRE book that Jay was suspicious all for him to…be fine? A red herring is one thing. Beating readers over the head with a character as a suspect over and over for them to not be suspicious at all in the end is just entirely too much.
What Alex’s friends did was absolutely ludicrous. 20/10 absolutely unrealistic, insane, asinine, even. And she just…wasn’t bothered? At all? That they made her believe she KILLED someone? Made her believe she was in danger? DRUGGED HER WITH AMBIEN?! And she wasn’t even that mad about it? No. Just…no. Also, Zoloft is a pretty mild SSRI. It would not make someone sleepwalk as described. Ambien has been known to do that. But not Zoloft. I’ve taken both. I’m well versed in both of these drugs and it’s just fully implausible.
And the narrator was not good. Her accents were so bad. 😩 Either someone who was familiar with Australian accents should have been cast, or she should have just not done an accent for Jay. It was cringy every single time.
Overall, I did not like this book at all.
Thank you to Netgalley and RB Media for the gifted copy.
