Instructions for Dancing by Nicola Yoon

4.0

“Love is the question and the answer and the reason to ask in the first place. It’s everything. All of it.”

4 stars. This was such a great story and I got a lot more out of it than I thought I would. Highly enjoyed it. It’s fast paced, a unique plot, great characters, and Yoon’s writing has improved a lot since her first two books.

Evie is now a cynical teenager who thinks love is BS after seeing her father cheating on her mother. She had her moments of self centered and annoying ways but for the most I really enjoyed her. Her growth and development was really well done and felt real. She had a great group of friends that I enjoyed and her relationship with X was so stinking cute even if it did move hella fast. They were just too adorable together as dance partners, as friends, and then as a couple. I enjoyed their banter and just how X as a character was such a sweet cinnamon roll. They made my teeth ache with their cuteness.

The family dynamic was wonderful and it was my favorite thing about this book. I say it all of the time but family drama can really make a book for me if done well and it was done really well here. I liked Evie’s family a lot. I loved seeing Evie come to an understanding with her father and thought they shared some really heartfelt moments.

The magic aspect was great as well and I liked that it wasn’t overused but some more explanation of it would’ve been great. That ending, though. Ouch. It’s so bittersweet and it’s the what comes after that makes me so sad. I wasn’t expecting that at all and my feelings are hurt.

Overall, this was a wonderful read and it left me smiling a lot but I’mma need an apology for that ending Mrs. Yoon! I’m stressed!
