by Michael Kupperman
I've been a fan of Michael Kupperman for a long time - his distinctive cross-hatched style and absurdist humor make him one of my favorite comics creators. This book is nothing like Snake and Bacon's Cartoon Cabaret. It inevitably invites comparison to Maus - both are comics by men trying to understand themselves by understanding their fathers' traumas. But although this comparison is unfair - Maus is Maus, after all - I felt that Kupperman never quite went deep enough here. Another example of this genre is Fun Home, and I think Allison Bechdel does a much better job of tying her own story to her father's.
On its own merits, however, this book is an interesting look at a child prodigy who was once a household name. And I'm glad to see Kupperman trying different kinds of things. He is, after all, an amazing creator.
