I picked up this book because I was told by a school librarian a request was made to have it removed. I am always curious about "banned" books because I just don't understand why. As I read this I was immersed in Jarrett's perspective as a child growing up with some fairly heavy dysfunction with his parents. Primarily raised by his mother's parents, he develops his own sense of family and the book is about his family development. It is also about his passion for art and how it is fostered by a variety of people, most surprisingly by his grandparents. I would rate it somewhere between a 3 to 4 (liked it to really liked it). I think it belongs in library spaces because it does show kids how to persevere and develop their passions despite all the other noise going on in their life.
