A Gathering of Shadows by V.E. Schwab

5.0

This was my second read of this book and I had forgotten just how much this one suffered from Second Book Syndrome. It is like a really long bridge to get from book one to book three, focused solely on character study and development, but as somebody who already loves this story, characters and knows how it all wraps up I didn't mind walking through it!

Lila Bard is still one of my favourite female characters, she does suffer from a bit of "I'm not like other girls" but I think that's because she could never allow herself the privilege of imagining herself as those other girls. The life she has lived never offered her the space to become comfortable with her gender because she needed to survive, which, unfortunately, meant she had to be a boy. It's what she's used to, it's her survival techniques, and now it's her identity. Which I think is perfectly fine, but I do think she often judges some girls for behaving the way society believes women should behave because she doesn't understand how they can go through the day 'unprotected' if that makes sense?

Kell, my sweet frowning emo boy. I do so adore him. an underrated book boyfriend in my opinion tbh because you know what he's always willing to do? DIE FOR YOU. LITERALLY.

Anyways, I won't give a long review because I already know I love this book BUT if you want to know when Kell and Lila will be reunited again, prep yourself for a long journey with this novel.
