This book had me sobbing at 2AM because I couldn't put it down. I'm not usually one for angst but this is written beautifully. There is mostly angst but there are heartwarming moments as well.
We follow Mo Xi pretty much the entire volume (which works because he is just as clueless as we are) and he is trying to find closure. On the surface and to most characters in the novel, Mo Xi seems stoic and prudish. But he actually holds so much passion and rage in his heart and this is exemplified when tender flashbacks coincide with the present. Gu Mang, who he loves and hates the most can't remember anything from the past, so Mo Xi is left heartbroken.
Gu Mang is still a mystery at this point. We get flashbacks of him, but we don't have enough information to piece together what had happened. Based off of the clues we got, it made sense to Mo Xi why he would defect from Chonghua, but not why he would work with an enemy nation that not only does cruel cultivation practices but also one that Mo Xi has a personal feud with.
