this was going to be a 5 star read, but the last hour of the book kind of threw me off. i totally understand that june was having a psychotic break and that was what was being shown, but it just took me out of the book and i felt like i was reading a different story. I'm really glad that i listened to this book because it allowed me to get into June's mind and to try to understand her inane reasoning. I normally cannot stand characters i find insufferable but there was a certain self awareness with june in the sense that she is supposed to be insufferable and so it made it easier to enjoy her inevitable downfall. Kuang does an amazing job at writing such a meta story about the intricacies of the publishing world in a fictional book, and also how race plays into the world as well.

i would recommend this book over and over again.
