Then and Now by W. Somerset Maugham

4.0

In high school, I had a physics teacher that never talked about physics. He was a bit like Carl Sagan if you replace the cosmos with earth and all the existential questions around humanity. He had an obsessive fascination with W. Somerset Maugham to the point that he started his own publishing house to translate his works into Estonian.

I can understand why. Not are Maugham's stories gripping, but his character noticeably adds flavor to his writings. While this may be true for many writers, you rarely get to read something from an orphaned physician, who worked as a spy for MI6, traveled around the world four times, and had a fascination for both men and women.
