Hangsaman by Shirley Jackson

jesus. this book came to me at the best or maybe the worst time in my life. reading it at first was strange as i saw my own anxieties and strange thoughts and mind processes reflected back at me. the way natalie interacts with other characters is just fantastic. there’s so much more to say. shirley jackson is the first author i have ever read where i really feel a strong kinship with the authorial voice itself. i don’t even really know what i’m saying. i just finished this book and i was captivated from start to finish, from the troubling beginning all the way up until the landslide of an ending, which rapidly spirals down and down until you aren’t sure if you’re even reading the same book anymore. the inclusion of Tony is fantastic, leaving you second guessing yourself as you read.
Possibly the best book I have actually ever read. I’m about to enter my third year of college and to step into my own adolescent mind was something else. Felt like reading my own crazy diary. I finished this while wired on espresso and the ending was heart poundingly terrifying, walking trees and asthmatic buses, and rollercoasters that bend forwards to listen to you. Hangsaman has totally rocked my world, and will always be special for me.

Spoiler SPOILERS AHEAD:
It almost reminded me of a female Fight Club, or The Secret History. Fans of both would definitely enjoy this, especially The Secret History- this is the real ‘dark academia’ that they speak of, that being extreme mental illness and not taking care of yourself.
