A Book of Five Rings: The Classic Guide to Strategy
by Miyamoto Musashi
A clear representation of the way a master of martial arts thinks both in terms of large scale ideas and specific techniques.
As a martial arts instructor myself, I find simple statements of this book often hold deep and profound insights on life and combat.
For example:
"Even when still, your mind is not still; even when hurried, your mind is not hurried" (Water Scroll 25).
This simple sentence gives you a glimpse into the mindset of an experienced combatant. The slight dissociation of a fighters mindset in action is a hard feeling to conceptualize for non martial artists. I think this statement is the best way to introduce someone into the control of mind martial artists must achieve regularly.
