The Friend
by Sigrid Nunez
In my mind, this forms a sort of weird trilogy with [b:My Year of Rest and Relaxation|44279110|My Year of Rest and Relaxation|Ottessa Moshfegh|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1597676656l/44279110._SY75_.jpg|55508660] and [b:What Are You Going Through|51152434|What Are You Going Through|Sigrid Nunez|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1585361945l/51152434._SY75_.jpg|74855144] - these are all about women who are sort of unwilling participants in life and the events around them. These are short novels, lean heavily towards literary fiction and have very little "plot". And I have been OK with all of them.
The Friend is about a grieving woman who has to take in her dead friend's dog. But mostly, it's about writing and death and other things. I didn't always like how much and how deeply it wandered off topic, but there were definitely some interesting ideas in the mix and I guess it's sort of comforting.
Would recommend!

“Tempted to put too much faith in the great male mind, remember this: It looked at cats and declared them gods. It looked at women and asked, Are they human? And, once that nut had been cracked: But do they have souls?”
