okay this was very definitely compelling, like it is a PAGE TURNER. but i don’t think it super worked for me. i don’t love first person pov anyways, and the style of the prose just wasn’t my favorite. i think if i were more up to date on booktok and book twitter stuff it would’ve hit harder/been more satisfying, but w some of the social media stuff i was like blah. the fucked up friendship/rivalry/tension/competition/affection between june and athena was VERY intriguing to me though, i really enjoyed the sections where you were able to see more glimpses of their nearly decade long friendship. the depiction of publishing really was a horror story lol. overall i don’t think it was bad but the ending fell kind of flat for me. i wanted a bigger implosion! idk.

this book definitely evoked feelings in me!!! i think i would rate it a 3.5, r.f. kuang can def write, i just don’t think this one was for me.
