Das goldene Garn by Cornelia Funke

4.0

I enjoyed reading this book, and now I want to find the next ones in the series because I definitely want to know more about the world and the characters.
I loved Mirrorworld and how it was steeped in fantastical creatures and legends from our own fairy tales and mythology, but how it was still progressing in the same way that ours did with guns and trains, an element that so many fantasy worlds don't have that i really liked.
And then I also really liked the characters. My favorite was probably Fox, though I probably wouldn't have known she was a shapeshifter until about halfway through the book if I hadn't read a few reviews on it. Not that it was a spoiler or anything, I just couldn't tell from the writing. I even liked the character of Jacob, though I wasn't too fond of him, especially during certain parts of the middle, but I loved how he was doing this all for his brother and how he was doing anything that he could to save him.
The only thing I didn't like was the romantic tension and whatnot that gratefully did not show up until the last third or quarter of the book.
we have Jacob developing feelings for Clara, and then Fox having feelings for Jacob and just all that blech sort of stuff
I wouldn't mind one book without that for once.
Other than that, there wasn't really anything I disliked (there was even less swearing in here than in Inkheart/Inkspell, which surprised me), though sometimes it was a little hard for me to read, but that's my own fault for only reading it in short bursts.
